About this position

History of Christianity PhD / MPhil at the University of Edinburgh

This postgraduate research programme in the School of Divinity (College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences) invites applications for research in History of Christianity, with strengths in patristics and early Christian history, the Reformation in Britain and on the continent, Puritanism, British and European Christianity from the 18th century, and Christian missions, especially in Africa.

Study options include a full-time PhD (3 years), a part-time PhD (6 years), and a full-time MPhil (2 years). The PhD by distance is available. Students work closely with supervisors on an independent research project, with regular one-to-one supervision and access to taught courses, research seminars, and language learning opportunities where relevant.

Eligibility highlights: MPhil applicants normally need a UK 2:1 honours degree (or international equivalent) in a relevant subject. PhD applicants normally need a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent plus a relevant master’s degree with strong performance, and should already have the academic background and research readiness for independent doctoral work. English language evidence is required for all applicants unless exempt under the university rules.

Funding: Divinity scholarships are awarded on academic merit and are often for PhD study, typically covering full fees and providing a stipend. The page also notes that most students combine multiple funding sources for tuition and living costs.

Application process: Contact a potential supervisor before applying, then submit the online application with a research proposal, references, transcripts, degree certificates, English language evidence, and a sample of written academic work. There is no application fee.

Deadline: 30 August 2027 for the September 2027 start.

Supervision: Potential supervisors listed include Dr Simon Burton, Dr Sara Parvis, Dr Philippa Townsend, Dr Kirsteen Murray, Dr Felicity Loughlin, Professor Alison Jack, and Dr Linden Bicket.
