Impact of chemical contaminants on chemosensory ability in fish La Trobe University in Australia

The Neuroecology group led by Shaun Collin in the School of Agriculture, Biomedicine and Environment, La Trobe University has exciting PhD scholarship opportunities as part of an Australian Research Council-funded Discovery Project (Aleicia Holland, Ewen Silvester and I are also part of this project). In fishes the ability to detect and respond to water-soluble odorants is critical for their survival. Many species of fish currently face significant challenges due to increasing levels of chemical pollutants in waterways that affect how they detect and respond to odorants. We seek to determine the impacts of chemical contaminants on chemosensory ability by using multidisciplinary approaches that include behavioural studies, electrophysiology, neuroanatomy, cell biology and molecular genetics.We are seeking enthusiastic PhD candidates to contribute to this important project. Successful applicants will receive a stipend, full tuition scholarship and allowances, to commence late 2024/early 2025.
