An exciting opportunity is available for postdoctoral researchers in the field of smart materials at Universität des Saarlandes, specifically within the Saarland Smart Materials Center. Prof. Paul Motzki is seeking an Independent Group Leader to lead research in areas such as electrostatics, shape memory materials, stimuli-responsive materials, and solid-state cooling technologies. The position is especially relevant for those interested in biomedical and medtech applications, life sciences, hybrid material approaches, soft and bio-inspired robotics, smart and functional textiles, and drone and space applications.

The successful candidate will join a vibrant research environment, fully integrated into a center that houses groups specializing in EAP, SMA, elastocaloric materials, electronics, and energy harvesting. The role offers a 5-year fully funded contract with tenure-track options, mentorship in academic career development, and active support for prestigious funding applications (ERC, EIC, DFG). Responsibilities include building and leading a research group, managing projects, writing scientific publications and proposals, supervising doctoral students, and contributing to strategic planning.

Applicants should hold a doctorate or equivalent degree in systems engineering, materials science, or a related field, with expertise in smart materials and experience in medical technology. Strong analytical, conceptual, and communication skills, as well as proficiency in German or English, are required.
