About this position

The International Leibniz Research School for Microbial and Biomolecular Interactions (ILRS Jena) is a doctoral programme based at the Leibniz Institute for Natural Product Research and Infection Biology, Hans Knöll Institute, in Jena, in cooperation with Friedrich Schiller University Jena.

The programme brings together research on microbial natural products and infection biology, with a particular emphasis on human-pathogenic fungi. PhD researchers work on how microorganisms interact with other species and with their hosts, and on how these interactions are shaped by microbial communication. A central theme is the ecological function of microbial natural products and their role in complex, multi-organismic networks.

Projects also explore the interaction between pathogenic microorganisms and the immune system, including the mechanisms pathogens use to overcome host defence and the molecules involved in these processes. The research aims to support the development of new diagnostic methods and anti-infectives based on natural products.

Students in the programme are trained in an interdisciplinary environment that combines microbiology, natural product chemistry, biotechnology, immunobiology, bioinformatics, and systems biology. The ILRS faculty includes professors and group leaders from multiple participating institutions, creating a highly interactive setting for scientific exchange and experimental work. ILRS is part of the Jena School for Microbial Communication, an excellence graduate school in Jena.

The programme also offers structured research and supervision, research training and discussion, career guidance, and comprehensive support for international doctoral candidates.
