About this position

International Max Planck Research School – Biological Intelligence (IMPRS-BI) is a structured doctoral programme based at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Intelligence in Planegg, Germany, in cooperation with Ludwig Maximilian University of Munich and the Technical University of Munich.

The school provides doctoral training for students interested in how nervous systems develop and evolve, and how animals use behaviour to navigate their environments and adapt to their ecological niches. The research themes connect neuroscience, behavioural ecology, ecology, connectomics, and evolutionary genetics, with the goal of understanding the nature of biological intelligence.

IMPRS-BI emphasises world-class research in an English-speaking environment, with access to state-of-the-art facilities and a structured training curriculum. Doctoral candidates are supported through expert supervision by direct advisers and thesis advisory committees, and benefit from additional training in scientific, computational, and transferable skills.

The programme brings together more than 35 scientists who mentor and support doctoral candidates, alongside mentoring and career advice opportunities with the partner universities. It also highlights support for international students and a research environment designed to help students build strong academic and professional foundations.

Every autumn, the school announces an open call for fully funded doctoral student positions in behaviour, neurobiology, connectomics, ecology, and evolutionary genetics.
