About this position

The International PhD Programme in Cancer Research at the German Cancer Research Center (DKFZ) in Heidelberg offers doctoral training in an internationally connected research environment focused on cancer. Students join one of more than 100 divisions and research groups working across fundamental, computational, epidemiological, and translational cancer research.

The programme is based at the DKFZ, Germany’s largest biomedical research institute, and is closely linked with the University of Heidelberg, where PhD candidates receive their doctoral degree from the Biosciences, Medical, or Physics Faculty. The research environment is highly interdisciplinary, bringing together students and projects from molecular biology, biochemistry, biophysics, mathematics, computational biology, computer science, epidemiology, public health, health economics, and related fields.

Research at the DKFZ spans the study of cancer development, the discovery of mechanisms underlying disease, and the identification of new approaches for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention. The centre highlights its modern infrastructure, international setting, and access to state-of-the-art facilities through the Helmholtz Association.

The programme also emphasizes structured research and supervision, research training and discussion, and a dedicated career service that supports PhD students in planning their professional future.
