About this position
University of Edinburgh Italian MScR offers a one-year full-time or two-year part-time postgraduate research degree beginning in September 2027. The programme is designed for students seeking to complete an independent research project in Italian studies, either as preparation for a PhD or as a stand-alone qualification.
Research may be critical, creative or practice-led and can address Italian literature, literary history and theory, comparative studies, translation, film studies, philology, philosophy, intermediality, media ecology, cultural studies, decolonial studies, digital humanities, environmental humanities, political theory and related areas. Students join the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures and benefit from research training, specialist collections, seminars, film screenings, writers’ talks and an interdisciplinary postgraduate community.
The programme includes two research-methods courses, two supervised 6,000-word research assignments and a supervised 15,000-word dissertation. Potential supervisors include Professor Davide Messina, Dr Emanuela Patti and Professor Federica Pedriali. Applicants are encouraged to review staff profiles and research interests before preparing their proposal.
Applicants should have near-native Italian competence and a UK 2:1 honours degree, or equivalent, in a related subject. Required materials include a 500-word personal statement, research proposal, approximately 3,000 words of written work, academic certificates and transcripts, two references, translations where needed, and English-language evidence. The application deadline is 30 June 2027, although early application is recommended, particularly for visa or funding purposes. There is no application fee. Funding is not automatic, but eligible Edinburgh graduates may apply for the £5,000-per-year John Orr Award and may receive a 10% tuition-fee discount.
