About this position

The University of Edinburgh is accepting applications for the full-time MScR Korean Studies, a one-year Master’s by Research programme beginning in September 2027. The programme is based in the School of Literatures, Languages and Cultures and is designed for students who want to complete an independent research project in Korean studies, either as a stand-alone qualification or as preparation for a future PhD.

Students receive training in research skills and methods, complete two 6,000-word research assignments, and write a supervised 15,000-word dissertation. Research may address modern Korean history, Korean society and culture, political economy, urban studies, security, public policy, political science or international relations, with opportunities to examine the Korean Peninsula and East Asian relations in global context.

Applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent in a related subject. Required materials include a personal statement, research proposal, approximately 3,000 words of written work, degree certificates and transcripts, two references, and certified translations where applicable. English-language evidence is also required through an accepted test or eligible degree or qualification.

The application deadline is 30 June 2027, for a programme start date of 13 September 2027. There is no application fee. The programme is not advertised as funded, so applicants should plan for tuition and living costs; estimated postgraduate living costs in Edinburgh are £18,504 per year for 2026–2027. Applicants are encouraged to review staff research profiles and contact the Departmental Postgraduate Research Director, Natascha Gentz, at [email protected], to discuss supervisory fit.
