The programme is designed for candidates with a background in landscape architecture or a related field who have a strong research idea and wish to make an original contribution to knowledge. Research is conducted under specialist supervisory guidance and may involve fieldwork, primary-source research, critical scholarship or practice-based design research.
Research themes include cultural landscapes and critical heritage studies, multispecies studies, time and environment, spatial and environmental justice, landscape experience and aesthetics, climate futures and risk landscapes, urban theory and infrastructure, decolonial epistemologies, community-based landscape architectural design research, landscape and wellbeing, and computational or GIS spatial research methods.
Applicants normally need a UK Master's degree or equivalent international qualification, though relevant professional experience may be considered.
