About this position
Study Linguistics at MSc by Research level at the University of Edinburgh. This postgraduate research programme allows students to specialise in an area of linguistics while taking selected taught courses and developing advanced research skills.
The programme is offered full time for one year or part time for two years, with a September 2027 start. Students develop an independent research project and dissertation with one-to-one supervision, supported by research-methodology training and access to seminars, reading groups, research resources, and the active postgraduate community in the School of Philosophy, Psychology and Language Sciences.
Applicants should normally hold a UK 2:1 honours degree, or international equivalent, in linguistics, English language, or a related subject. Candidates with a 2:1 in another subject may also be considered if they have a postgraduate master's degree in English language or linguistics. A research proposal of approximately 500 words is required, explaining the proposed topic and area of investigation. The proposal should align with the University's research expertise and demonstrate clear basic aims.
Applicants must also provide a personal statement, relevant knowledge or training skills, academic transcripts, references, and evidence of English-language proficiency. Accepted evidence includes specified IELTS, TOEFL iBT, C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency, Oxford ELLT, or Oxford Test of English Advanced scores, as well as eligible degrees taught and assessed in English.
Round 1 closes on 9 November 2026 and is the deadline for consideration for University of Edinburgh-based funding. Round 2 closes on 12 April 2027. There is no application fee. Funding is competitive and may include Scottish Graduate School awards, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences Research Awards, Edinburgh Doctoral College Scholarships, or external sources. Tuition fees and living costs are not automatically covered.
