About this position
Marie Skłodowska-Curie Doctoral Researcher – Mechanical Engineering at the University of Birmingham (Edgbaston, Birmingham, UK).
This is a PhD-level doctoral opening within SurPhase, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network funded under Horizon Europe. The programme is interdisciplinary and focuses on phase-change heat transfer, bringing together expertise in thermal sciences, surface engineering, advanced manufacturing, computational modelling, data-driven methods, durability, and sustainability.
The University of Birmingham is recruiting four Doctoral Candidates, each appointed as a Research Fellow I for 36 months and undertaking an individual doctoral project. The Birmingham projects include: advanced surface engineering for enhanced flow boiling, molecular modelling of phase change at engineered interfaces, data-driven design of surfaces for enhanced boiling, and durability and sustainability of engineered heat-transfer surfaces.
Successful candidates will participate in the network-wide research and training programme, work with academic and industrial partners, and complete secondments and transferable-skills training. The role involves original research, publication, conference dissemination, collaborative work, and contribution to the wider research environment.
Eligibility / requirements: normally a relevant higher degree, typically a PhD or near completion, plus extensive research experience in the subject area, proven project-management ability, successful development/application of methods and models, and experience in knowledge transfer or enterprise-related activity. EDI commitment is also required.
Funding: fixed salary of £49,747 plus possible additional allowances. The position is part of an MSCA Doctoral Network, but the post description does not state a separate stipend amount.
Deadline: 15 November 2026.
