Funded PhD opportunity at the University of Warwick in the United Kingdom on sporulation biology of a honey-bee pathogen . This project focuses on Paenibacillus larvae , the bacterium that causes American Foul Brood (AFB) in honeybee larvae. AFB is a serious notifiable disease in many countries, including the UK, and has major consequences for beekeeping and pollinator health. The research aims to build a deeper molecular understanding of how this spore-forming pathogen completes its life cycle ...

We’re inviting applications for a fully funded PhD studentship held in partnership between the University of Exeter and The Marine Biological Association (MBA) in Plymouth, UK. This interdisciplinary project is part of the ERC-funded DIACIDAL project, and offers a unique opportunity to investigate antagonistic interactions between phytoplankton and bacterial pathogens using cutting-edge single-cell methodologies.

?? Project Highlights:
1. Study single-cell infection dynamics in lab cultures
2. Conduct mesocosm experiments in natural marine communities
3. Analyse single-cell microbiomes during phytoplankton blooms in the Western English Channel

Training in microbial physiology, advanced microscopy, bacterial genetics and bioinformatics

?? Location: Primarily based at the MBA, with time at the University of Exeter’s Streatham Campus
?? Start Date: Between February and September 2026
?? Funding: Home/International tuition + annual stipend of £20,780 for 3.5 years
?? Eligibility: First or Upper Second Class degree in Biological Sciences, microbiology, marine biology or plant sciences

You’ll join a dynamic, inclusive research group and receive mentorship from a collaborative supervisory team including:
