About this position
The University of Edinburgh is inviting applications for its Mathematics Education PhD programme, based in the School of Mathematics and the College of Science and Engineering. The programme explores mathematics education research within a vibrant community of educators and provides opportunities to engage with related groups, including the Edinburgh Physics Education Group and the interdisciplinary Centre for Research in Digital Education.
Students can study full time over four years or part time over eight years, with options with or without an internship requirement. The programme includes 120 credits of taught courses, with 60 credits normally completed in the first year. Research students receive primary and secondary supervision and join a community of more than 100 academic and related staff supervising over 200 PhD students.
Applicants typically need a UK first-class honours degree, or international equivalent, in an appropriate subject; alternatively, a UK 2:1 honours degree plus a master's degree, equivalent qualifications, or relevant experience. Applications should include a personal statement, relevant skills and training, two references, an academic CV, degree certificates and transcripts, English-language evidence, and—where applicable—a research proposal, research topic, supervisor details and published-work information.
Accepted English evidence includes IELTS Academic 6.5 overall with at least 6.0 in each component, specified TOEFL iBT scores, C1 Advanced/C2 Proficiency, Oxford ELLT, Oxford Test of English Advanced, or an eligible degree taught and assessed in English. There is no application fee.
Applications received by 18 January 2027 receive full consideration for funding, although later applications may be considered until positions are filled. Most Mathematics PhD students receive full scholarships covering tuition fees and living costs, while other funding routes include scholarships, loans, savings, employment income and sponsorship. The programme is located in Edinburgh, United Kingdom, with access to computing, research facilities, networks and student support services.
