About this position
This Monash–Bayreuth double PhD project sits within an international joint doctoral program linking Monash University and the University of Bayreuth. The successful candidate will be based at Monash’s Clayton campus and undertake an extended research stay in Germany as part of a collaborative, cross-continental doctoral experience.
The project is focused on accelerating the discovery and design of next-generation organic semiconductor materials with tailored optoelectronic properties. You will work at the intersection of generative AI, molecular dynamics, density functional theory, computational chemistry, and materials science to develop computational approaches for exploring and predicting new semiconductor materials and their properties.
The position is embedded in the DFG-funded IRTG 2818 / OPTEXC framework and offers access to joint supervision, dual academic networks, specialised facilities, and industry links across both institutions. The program is designed for doctoral researchers seeking an interdisciplinary environment that combines artificial intelligence with advanced materials modelling.
The research setting draws on Monash University’s strength in materials science and engineering and the University of Bayreuth’s expertise in organic/inorganic semiconductors, optical excitations, macromolecular science, and advanced energy technologies.

What's required
Applicants should hold, or be close to completing, a Bachelor Honours degree (H1 or equivalent) and/or a Master's degree with an excellent academic record. Candidates currently completing a 4-year Honours degree (or equivalent 3+1 year program) with a final-year research project, aiming for or achieving an H1 standard, will also be considered. Applicants must not already hold a PhD. Background or experience in computational chemistry, materials simulation, scientific machine learning/AI, molecular dynamics or DFT, and materials science or a related discipline is preferred. Strong written and verbal English communication skills, problem-solving ability, and the capacity to work independently and as part of a multidisciplinary research team are expected.
