About this position
The MSc Advanced Nursing at the University of Edinburgh is designed for registered nurses working in a global context who want to advance professional practice, develop research expertise and contribute to positive change in healthcare. Delivered by the School of Health in Social Science, the programme connects nursing, health and social care research with real-world clinical and organisational challenges.
Students can follow a flexible general pathway or specialise in leadership or education. The programme supports nurses seeking senior leadership responsibilities, careers in nursing education, or a deeper theoretical and research-based understanding of healthcare. Learning focuses on critically evaluating evidence, applying research to practice and developing innovative responses to complex nursing and healthcare problems.
The curriculum provides opportunities to explore contemporary issues across nursing, health and social care. Depending on the courses available, students may study areas including global public health, community nursing, critical care, acquired brain injury and stroke rehabilitation, person-centred care, homelessness and inclusion health, and complex interventions. Optional courses can be selected from offerings within the School and across the University to align study with professional goals.
Teaching includes lectures, seminars, workshops and student-led study circles, encouraging active learning, critical analysis and professional development. Full-time students undertake core and option courses across one year, while part-time students complete the programme over two years. Dissertation routes may include an empirical project or research proposal, supporting progression toward doctoral-level study.
Students join a research-intensive university with access to contemporary nursing scholarship, research-informed teaching and a supportive learning environment. The programme is intended to develop advanced specialist knowledge, critical research skills and the confidence to provide evidence-based care in local and international contexts.
