About this position

This postdoctoral research position at KU Leuven focuses on developing and validating advanced multiphoton imaging strategies for high-throughput crystallization screening in pharmaceutical materials. The project is embedded within the Molecular Imaging and Photonics (MIP) group at KU Leuven KULAK (Kortrijk campus), an internationally oriented team specializing in nonlinear and multiphoton optical spectroscopy and microscopy for molecular and materials characterization. The MIP group operates state-of-the-art laser and optical infrastructure, including femtosecond laser systems and advanced nonlinear microscopy platforms, providing a supportive environment with hands-on training and opportunities for mentoring and co-supervision of PhD and Master’s students.

The research aims to explore polarization-resolved third-harmonic generation (THG) as a universal, label-free probe for detecting trace crystallinity, advancing complementary harmonic imaging (CHI) by combining polarization-resolved SHG and THG to access structural information beyond conventional bulk analytical techniques. The project will also investigate widefield THG imaging concepts for high-throughput crystallization screening, offering clear academic novelty and opportunities for high-impact scientific publications. Collaboration with the Division of Drug Delivery and Pharmaceutical Analysis at KU Leuven ensures access to expertise in pharmaceutical solid-state analysis and formulation characterization, while active industrial involvement from partners in the pharmaceutical and photonics sectors supports technology development and valorization activities.

Applicants must hold a PhD in Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, Physical Chemistry, or a closely related field, with a strong experimental background in nonlinear and/or multiphoton optics. Experience with harmonic generation, multiphoton microscopy, ultrafast laser–based techniques, and quantitative analysis of imaging data (e.g. Python, MATLAB) is highly valued. Candidates should demonstrate proven experience in building and critically evaluating optical experiments, solid understanding of optical imaging and polarization optics, and the ability to work independently at a postdoctoral level. Good scientific communication skills in English and a track record of first-author publications are expected.

The position offers a full-time contract for two years, starting with an initial 1-year appointment and possible extension after positive evaluation. A track record of first-author publications demonstrating methodological or conceptual contributions is expected.
