About this position
The University of Amsterdam’s Faculty of Science is recruiting multiple PhD candidates for a project on symmetries and their breaking in deep learning, supported by a Simons Foundation grant. The positions are based in the Amsterdam Machine Learning Lab (AMLab), in a new research group led by Associate Professor Nabil Iqbal at the intersection of deep learning and physics.
The project seeks mathematically principled explanations for how modern neural networks develop complex capabilities from simple components. Inspired by ideas from statistical physics, the research will investigate how symmetry and spontaneous symmetry breaking can explain the coherent propagation of information through deep architectures and the integration of information across space and time.
Possible research directions include using symmetry-breaking principles to design physically inspired neural-network architectures for efficient computation, and studying generative models such as diffusion models and autoregressive text generation. The project will also explore non-reciprocal thermodynamics, generalization from training data, and how fundamental dynamical principles can guide the creation of structure in generative models.
Each PhD project will be developed jointly with the PI to reflect mutual interests. Researchers will work with other students and postdocs in AMLab and combine theoretical research with empirical experimentation, including mathematical analysis, algorithm development, coding, and evaluation of deep-learning models on high-performance computing infrastructure. The group’s broader environment includes research in deep generative models, approximate inference, probabilistic programming, Bayesian deep learning, causal inference, reinforcement learning, graph neural networks, and geometric deep learning.
PhD candidates will conduct independent research, present findings at conferences, workshops, and journals, contribute to teaching and student supervision, and complete a doctoral thesis within four years.
