About this position
This fellowship is hosted by the Air Force Research Laboratory within the U.S. Department of Defense and is based at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, with the appointment located in Dayton. The project places the participant in a research community working with an ORISE mentor on modeling approaches related to neural stimulation and inhibition by laser exposure.
The research is centered on understanding how laser energy drives biological and biophysical responses in neurons. The fellowship focuses on reconstructing thermal gradients produced under different laser exposure conditions, examining how temperature changes relate to membrane potential, and studying excitation versus inhibition as a function of heating kinetics and the roles of individual ion populations.
As part of the appointment, the fellow will contribute to interpreting experimental data, designing simulation configurations to test possible explanations for neuronal response, and developing scientific communication through journal publications and technical reports. The opportunity is embedded in the 711th Human Performance Wing, part of AFRL, which brings together human performance research, education, and consultation under one organization.
The program is administered through ORISE in partnership with the sponsoring agency, and it offers a structured research environment connected to the Air Force Research Laboratory.
