About this position
The National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) at the National Institutes of Health is offering a postgraduate opportunity through its new Health and Extreme Weather (HEW) Intramural Scholars Program. The program is designed to train early-career scientists within the NIH Intramural Research Program and support research on the health effects of emerging environmental threats.
Scholars will work on projects aligned with HEW priorities, including environmental exposures such as air pollution, wildfire smoke, temperature-related stressors, and related physical exposures. The initiative is intended to build research capacity in environmental health, strengthen collaboration across institutions, and accelerate scientific discovery on how extreme weather and other hazards affect human health.
Participants will conduct research in collaboration with NIH investigators and a mentor, contributing to manuscripts and presentations while gaining access to advanced research facilities and tools. The program also emphasizes professional development, with opportunities to take part in grant writing, leadership development, cross-disciplinary collaboration, workshops, and scientific symposia.
The appointment is based in one of the NIH Institutes and Centers within the NIH Intramural Research Program, offering a research-intensive environment with world-class facilities and a strong mentorship structure. The opportunity is administered through ORAU/ORISE on behalf of NIH.
This is a training-focused research appointment for early-career scientists interested in environmental health and the science of extreme weather impacts.
