About this position

The Department of Computer Science at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) invites applications for a PhD Candidate position focused on the AI Enhancement of Game-Based Learning. This opportunity is part of the newly established AI Centre for the Empowerment of Human Learning (AI LEARN), a national initiative dedicated to advancing responsible, human-centered artificial intelligence to empower learning. AI LEARN aims to become an internationally leading interdisciplinary hub, fostering foundational research, responsible innovation, robust governance, and broad capacity building in the field of AI and education.

The PhD project is associated with the Technological Advancement cluster of AI LEARN and seeks to develop innovative applications, tools, and models for AI-driven game-based learning. The candidate will design, develop, and evaluate interactive, personalized learning experiences that leverage AI technologies, working closely with a postdoctoral researcher to establish frameworks and technologies for game-based learning. The research approach emphasizes Design-Based Research and Responsible Research and Innovation principles, with a strong focus on user-centered design and participatory activities involving end-users and stakeholders.

Key duties include conducting literature reviews, organizing co-creation and participatory design workshops, implementing services and interfaces, planning and conducting case studies, collecting and analyzing empirical data, writing research articles and reports, attending international conferences, and participating in dissemination activities within the AI LEARN centre. The candidate will be a member of the Software Engineering research group and will collaborate with partners in schools, public, and private sectors.

Applicants must hold a Master's degree in Computer Science or a closely related field, with a specialization in learning technologies, game-based learning, serious games, or human-AI collaboration. The degree must be equivalent to a five-year Norwegian course with 120 credits at the master's level. Strong academic performance (B or better on the NTNU scale) and solid knowledge of quantitative and qualitative research methods are required. Proficiency in written and spoken English is mandatory, with minimum scores specified for TOEFL, IELTS, or Cambridge English exams. Candidates lacking Scandinavian language skills must complete Norwegian courses during employment.

Preferred qualifications include experience as a research assistant, relevant publications, and strong presentation skills in Norwegian or Scandinavian languages. Personal qualities such as independence, teamwork, analytical ability, and motivation are highly valued. The employment period is three years, with a possible extension to four years for career promotion work.

NTNU is committed to diversity, equality, and inclusion, and encourages applications from candidates of all backgrounds. The university is located in Trondheim, a vibrant European city known for its rich cultural scene, excellent welfare system, and high quality of life. The Department of Computer Science is Norway's leading academic IT environment, offering a wide range of theoretical and applied programs and research opportunities.
