About this position

Leiden University is recruiting a PhD candidate for the research project Entangled with Seaweed, focused on ethnographic research into the politics of valuing seaweed and the impacts of blue economy strategies in Scotland.

The project sits in the Institute of Cultural Anthropology and Development Sociology at Leiden University and is part of a broader collaboration with the University of Edinburgh, the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS), and Stellenbosch University. The research combines anthropology, cultural anthropology, social anthropology, environmental science, ecology, and natural resources management, with a strong focus on political ecology, valuation studies, environmental justice, and seaweed as part of coastal and marine socio-ecological systems.

The PhD researcher will develop a proposal, conduct 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork in Scotland, and analyse how seaweed economisation affects coastal communities, social relations, and human/non-human entanglements. Methods include historical document and policy analysis, participant observation, interviews, and participatory visual storytelling. The role also includes dissertation writing, academic and non-academic dissemination, workshops, seminars, and exhibition-related activities.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in Anthropology, Sociology, Environmental Humanities, Science and Technology Studies, or another relevant social science/humanities discipline; excellent qualitative research and ethnographic fieldwork experience; strong English; and interest in sustainability and environmental justice. Knowledge of Scots or Scottish Gaelic is a bonus.

The salary is €3204–€4051 gross per month (full-time), with holiday allowance, end-of-year bonus, pension, commuting reimbursement, and other employment benefits.
