About this position

Promovendus Cardiogenetica: Cardiomyopathie en risicovoorspelling at Maastricht University is a PhD project within the MIRACLE-DCM programme, focused on improving personalized risk prediction for patients and families with genetic dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM).

The project studies how mutation-specific genetic information can be integrated into existing clinical risk models to better estimate the risk of malignant ventricular arrhythmias and the development of DCM. The research has a strong translational focus: the aim is to move from genetic and clinical data toward quantitative individual risk estimates that can support clinical decision-making and contribute to an interactive online risk platform.

You will work in a multidisciplinary environment at the intersection of cardiology, clinical genetics, epidemiology, and data science. The project involves close collaboration with cardiologists, clinical geneticists, researchers, and other experts, including international partners. A large existing database of genetic and clinical data is available, so the work can begin immediately with data analysis, model development, and validation.

  • Assessing mutation-specific differences in risk within genes such as LMNA, FLNC, and TTN
  • Analyzing and integrating genetic, clinical, and population data
  • Applying and evaluating existing risk calculators for genetic DCM
  • Estimating mutation-specific risk of DCM development in asymptomatic relatives
  • Evaluating the added value of mutation-specific information for clinical decision-making and pre-implantation genetic testing
  • Translating findings into an interactive online tool and recommendations for national and international guidelines

The position is embedded in the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences and Maastricht UMC+, in an international and interdisciplinary research and clinical environment.
