About this position
This PhD project examines the cybersecurity challenges that arise when artificial intelligence is developed and used in the maritime domain. The research sits at the intersection of information security, AI, maritime operations, and data engineering, with a focus on understanding risks associated with training data, AI models, and the integration of AI into maritime applications.
The project is embedded in a multidisciplinary environment at NTNU’s campus in Ålesund, close to the maritime industry and research communities. The PhD candidate will participate in the Cyber-Physical Systems Laboratory (CPS Lab) and contribute to the Norwegian Maritime AI Center, a collaborative initiative involving NTNU, the University of Oslo, the Oslo School of Architecture and Design, the Royal Norwegian Naval Academy, the Norwegian Mapping Authority, MET, and SINTEF Nordvest, together with many industry partners.
Research themes mentioned in the advert include data poisoning and manipulation, privacy and confidentiality, secure data sharing, and approaches for assessing the security and trustworthiness of maritime AI technology. The center works across a broad set of maritime use cases such as logistics, shipping and business transactions, ship design and construction, voyage planning and optimization, condition monitoring and maintenance, crew training, maritime traffic and ship surveillance, decarbonization and energy management, and autonomous ships with remote control.
The position offers the opportunity to work in close collaboration with academic and industrial partners in a strong international setting, contributing new knowledge about secure and trustworthy maritime AI systems.
