About this position
PhD Candidate in Flood Risk Modelling for the Financial Sector (Pillar 1) at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Economics and Business, within the Flood Insurance and Risk Management (FIRM) research programme.
This PhD project sits at the intersection of civil engineering, hydrology, actuarial science, econometrics, applied mathematics, statistics, and economics. The research aims to improve flood risk models for financial applications, including stress testing, insurance pricing, capital requirements, and adaptation pathways for insurers and other financial institutions.
The project focuses on two main themes: (1) flood risk due to failure of flood defenses in delta regions, including dependencies between dike sections, emergency measures, and residual strength; and (2) flood risk from extreme precipitation, including the spatial extent of rainfall events and probabilistic rainfall event size distributions based on radar imagery. The work will also quantify the effects of climate change and adaptation pathways on expected annual damage, insurance premiums, and total costs.
You will work in a large national research consortium with direct access to unique insurance claims data and hydraulic model sets, collaborating with researchers at the University of Amsterdam, experts from the field, Nationale-Nederlanden, and other FIRM partners. The position includes teaching duties of about 20% of your time, plus opportunities to present at international conferences and publish in peer-reviewed journals.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree (or completion before September 2026) in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Actuarial Science, Econometrics, Applied Mathematics, or a related field; strong quantitative risk analysis and probabilistic modelling skills; programming experience in Python, R, or similar; ability to communicate technical findings to non-specialists; fluency in English; Dutch is an asset.
Funding and conditions: this is a paid PhD employment contract for 4 years, with a gross monthly salary from €3,204 to €4,051, plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The role is based at the University of Amsterdam in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
Deadline: 17 September 2026. Apply through the UvA vacancy portal with a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, and two academic referees.
