About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Amsterdam (UvA), Faculty of Economics and Business, within the Flood Insurance and Risk Management (FIRM) programme. This position is part of Pillar 2 and focuses on the macroeconomics of flood risk and climate adaptation, with an emphasis on how insurers and other financial institutions respond to long-term flood-risk management strategies.

The project sits at the intersection of economics, environmental science, finance, actuarial science, econometrics, and water management. You will develop a macroeconomic model linking flood-risk evolution, adaptation pathways, capital-market responses, bank and insurer capital requirements, investment climate, GDP effects, and distributional impacts across regions. The research also examines tipping points under climate and transition risks and compares strategies such as protection, retreat, adaptive building, and spatial planning.

The FIRM programme runs from 2026–2030 and is funded by TKI Deltatechnologie, Nationale-Nederlanden, and more than 10 partners from academia, the financial sector, engineering consultancies, and government. The selected PhD candidate will collaborate with other FIRM pillars, work with researchers from UvA and Deltares, and engage with insurers and policymakers through workshops and case studies in the Netherlands, with possible international applications.

Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree (or completion before September 2026) in Economics, Econometrics, Actuarial Science, Applied Mathematics, Environmental Sciences, or a related field; strong quantitative skills; programming experience in Python, R, MATLAB, or similar; ability to work with stakeholders; interest in Dutch spatial planning and water management; fluent English, with Dutch as an asset.

Funding and conditions: this is a salaried PhD employment contract for 38 hours per week over 4 years. Salary is €3,204 in year 1 rising to €4,051 in year 4, plus 8% holiday allowance and 8.3% year-end bonus. Additional benefits include pension accrual, vacation leave, training opportunities, and support for doctoral development.

Deadline: 17 September 2026. Applications must be submitted through the UvA vacancy portal and include a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, and two academic referees.
