About this position
Postdoctoral Researcher in Damage Functions, Building Back Better and Early Warning (Pillar 4) at the University of Amsterdam, Faculty of Economics and Business, within the Flood Insurance and Risk Management (FIRM) programme.
This postdoctoral project focuses on flood damage modelling, damage functions, early warning, and building-back-better strategies for residential buildings in the Netherlands. The research aims to improve the Dutch Damage and Casualty Module by using insurance claims data and observed damage information, especially for shallow inundations where current models underestimate losses.
You will develop a new dataset of observed damages and physical conditions, derive statistically robust damage functions, quantify the risk-reduction potential and cost-effectiveness of flood-resilient materials and improved drainage, and design/evaluate experiments on targeted warning messages versus generic government warnings. The role also includes knowledge transfer to sector partners and around 20% teaching duties, including tutorials and supervision of Master’s theses.
Research environment: FIRM is a five-year research programme (2026–2030) funded by TKI Deltatechnologie, Nationale-Nederlanden, and more than 10 partners from academia, finance, engineering consultancies, and government. The vacancy is within the Actuarial Science and Mathematical Finance research group at the Amsterdam School of Economics.
Eligibility highlights: a completed or near-completed PhD before September 2026 in Civil Engineering, Hydrology, Actuarial Science, Econometrics, Applied Statistics, or a related field; experience with statistical modelling/regression on damage or loss data; Python or R and large datasets; English fluency required; Dutch is an asset.
Funding: 2-year temporary employment, 38 hours/week, salary €3,706–€5,760 per month plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. The 30% ruling may apply to non-Dutch candidates.
Deadline: 17 September 2026. Apply through the UvA vacancy portal with a motivation letter, CV, transcripts, and two referees.
