About this position
PhD Candidate in High-Frequency Wide-Bandgap Power Conversion Technologies at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Department of Electric Energy, Trondheim.
This full-time, 3-year PhD position is part of the Power Electronics and Electrical Machines (PEM) research group at NTNU. The project focuses on high-frequency wide-bandgap semiconductor technologies, especially SiC and GaN, and how they can improve efficiency, power density, and switching performance in next-generation power conversion systems.
The successful candidate will work on advanced analytical modelling, multi-domain optimization, hardware development, and experimental validation. Research topics may include high-frequency converter architectures, modulation techniques, advanced switching strategies, wide-bandgap device switching behaviour, gate-drive optimization, electromagnetic compatibility, electro-thermal modelling, and reliability-oriented design methodologies. The work will be validated on a laboratory-scale prototype for an electrified energy application such as electric propulsion or another high-performance energy conversion system.
NTNU describes the department as an open, inclusive, and collaborative environment with regular research group meetings, weekly colloquia, shared lunches, and social activities such as Friday coffee. The position offers academic training, participation in conferences and research stays, and opportunities for career-enhancing work such as teaching or laboratory supervision if needed and suitable.
Funding and conditions: The position is conditional on funding. The gross annual salary is normally NOK 550,800, depending on qualifications and seniority. The employment period is 3 years, with the possibility of an additional 3 to 12 months linked to career-enhancing activities.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants need a relevant Master's degree in power electronics, a strong academic record, admission eligibility for the Faculty's Doctoral Programme, and English proficiency at CEFR B2 or higher. Preferred experience includes laboratory development in power electronics, scientific publications, and programming tools such as Python, Matlab, or C/C++.
Application deadline: 21 September 2026.
How to apply: Submit the application electronically through Jobbnorge.no with the required documents: cover letter, project outline, CV, degree transcripts and diplomas, master's thesis, relevant publications, English language documentation if needed, and three referees.

What's required
Applicants must have a relevant Master's degree in power electronics corresponding to a five-year Norwegian degree with 120 credits at master's level. A strong academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's grading scale or equivalent; candidates with weaker grades may be considered if they can document particular suitability through relevant work experience and/or publishable scientific papers. Applicants must meet the Faculty's admission requirements for the Doctoral Programme. English proficiency at CEFR B2 is required, with documented test scores accepted such as TOEFL iBT 79-101, IELTS 5.5-6.0, or Cambridge English 160-179; C1-level English is preferred. Experience with laboratory development in power electronics, scientific publications, and programming tools such as Python, Matlab, or C/C++ are advantageous. The candidate should show strong motivation, curiosity, independence, good structure, collaboration skills, resilience, integrity, and responsibility.
How to apply
Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Include a cover letter, project outline, CV, transcripts and diplomas, copy of the master's thesis, publications or other research work, English language documentation if applicable, and contact details for three referees.
