About this position
This PhD position at the Department of Design, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is based in Trondheim and linked to Shore Control Lab, a design and human factors research environment focused on human-centred design for safety-critical operational contexts. The project sits within the Norwegian Maritime AI Centre (MAI), a national hub for research, innovation, and education in artificial intelligence for the maritime domain.
The doctoral work focuses on human-AI teaming in maritime operations. The successful candidate will develop tangible, interactive design concepts that support collaboration between onboard and remote operators and AI systems. The research emphasizes how people can work effectively with AI in operational settings, including when to rely on AI recommendations, when to question them, and when to override them.
The project contributes to research in human-computer interaction and human factors, with attention to AI-enabled maritime systems, operational decision-making, and the design of transparency and explainability in complex, safety-critical work. A core part of the project is to create and evaluate interaction concepts that help make AI-supported operations more trustworthy, usable, and resilient in real-world maritime contexts.
Methodologically, the PhD will combine human-centred design, iterative prototyping, user testing, qualitative and quantitative approaches, and empirical evaluation. The work includes designing concepts, building prototypes, running studies, and contributing results to relevant research venues. The candidate will also take part in cross-disciplinary MAI activities and collaborate with partners working on real-world use cases across the maritime value chain.
The position is embedded in a strong design and research environment at NTNU, with connections to industry, research institutions, and public-sector actors through MAI. It offers an opportunity to work at the intersection of design, AI, and maritime safety in an international academic setting.
