About this position
The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a PhD Candidate in Industrial High-Temperature Heat Pumps for Decarbonized Heat Generation in Trondheim, Norway. The position is based in the Department of Energy and Process Engineering's Refrigeration research group and forms part of the KSP project IndHTHP, conducted in close collaboration with SINTEF Energi AS.
The research addresses industrial electrification and sustainable energy systems through high-temperature heat pumps (HTHPs). The PhD project will investigate dynamic modelling and optimization, innovative heat-pump cycle concepts, natural refrigerants and water-based systems, heat-pump technologies above 160°C and ultra-high-temperature systems above 250°C, industrial process integration, control strategies, techno-economic performance, and experimental validation in laboratory and field settings.
Key duties include developing and validating Modelica/Dymola simulation models, analyzing heat-pump architectures and working fluids, assessing industrial applicability, conducting experiments, publishing research, participating in international activities, and supervising project and master's thesis students. The candidate will have access to joint NTNU and SINTEF facilities in Trondheim.
Applicants need a relevant master's degree in refrigeration engineering with a minimum 30-ECTS independent project, normally a B average or equivalent, experience with dynamic modelling of energy systems and heat pumps in Dymola/Modelica, knowledge of experimental investigation and data analysis, and English proficiency at B2 level. Publications and Scandinavian-language skills are advantageous. The master's degree must be completed and documented by September 2026 if the applicant is still studying.
This is a full-time, three-year temporary PhD position with a normal gross salary of NOK 580,000 per year, subject to qualifications and seniority, and a 2% pension contribution. Employment depends on external funding and admission to NTNU's engineering PhD programme. Applications, including academic records, CV, thesis, project outline, motivation letter and three referees, must be submitted through Jobbnorge by 11 November 2026.

What's required
Applicants must meet the admission requirements for NTNU's doctoral programme in engineering and hold a relevant master's degree in refrigeration engineering, including a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS equivalent to a master's thesis. Master's students may apply, but must obtain and document the degree before starting, no later than September 2026. Applicants should normally have a master's average grade of B or better, or an equivalent academic foundation; weaker backgrounds may be considered with evidence of exceptional suitability, relevant work experience or peer-reviewed publications. Experience with dynamic modelling of energy systems and heat pumps in Dymola/Modelica, interest in modelling and simulating complex multiphysical systems involving heat and mass transfer, and experience with experimental investigations and data analysis are required. Good oral and written English at B2 level is required. Scientific publications and Norwegian or another Scandinavian language are advantageous. Candidates should be structured, motivated, adaptable, able to analyze data and communicate research effectively.
How to apply
Apply electronically through Jobbnorge.no by 11 November 2026. Submit transcripts and diplomas, CV, master's thesis or draft, a maximum 1,500-word project outline, a short motivation letter, and names and contact information for three referees. Include relevant publications, certificates and documentation of foreign education where applicable.
