About this position

The University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (UKE) in Germany is recruiting PhD candidates and research assistants for the Research Training Group (RTG) “Multiscale Imaging and Analytics of Interfaces in Musculoskeletal Health.” This interdisciplinary program brings together experts from UKE, Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH), DESY (PETRA III), and Helmholtz-Zentrum Hereon to advance research at the intersection of life sciences, engineering, and data-driven science. The RTG integrates advanced imaging, electron microscopy, synchrotron imaging, nano- and micro-CT, spectroscopy, biomechanics, computational modeling, and AI-driven analytics to study musculoskeletal interfaces and their adaptation, failure, or regeneration.

Ten PhD positions are available for the first cohort (2026–2030), with applicants able to select up to three projects from a diverse portfolio, including bone marrow fat analysis, tendon-to-bone healing, age-related musculoskeletal changes, high-resolution tissue imaging, osteocyte network studies, vascular-bone interactions, deep learning for imaging, biomechanics, zebrafish locomotion, and sex-specific vascular mechanisms in motion. The program is ideal for candidates with a strong analytical background and a passion for interdisciplinary research innovation.

Applicants must have a Master’s degree in a STEM field (biology, biochemistry, biomedical engineering, materials science, life sciences, computer science, mechanical engineering, mathematics, physics, or data science). Experience in experimental or computational research, statistical analysis, programming, and a willingness to learn new methods are valued. Strong teamwork, communication, and motivation are essential, as is a commitment to structured training and interdisciplinary collaboration. Proof of immunization against measles is required before employment.
