About this position

The Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU) is seeking a PhD candidate in Materials Physics to join the Department of Physics in Trondheim. The position is part of the RACE – Recycled Aluminium Corrosion Engineering project, funded by the Norwegian Research Council, which aims to develop next-generation aluminium alloys with superior corrosion resistance and high recycled content for automotive applications. The successful candidate will focus on advanced characterization of aluminium alloys produced from post-consumer scrap, investigating microstructure–property relationships and corrosion mechanisms. Key research tasks include performing advanced transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and complementary techniques such as SEM and EBSD to study grain boundaries, precipitate-free zones, and solute distribution; developing and applying high-throughput data analysis methods for TEM experiments; and investigating corrosion initiation and propagation mechanisms, linking them to alloy composition and processing. The candidate will collaborate closely with SINTEF and industrial partners Hydro and Benteler to provide input for alloy design and processing strategies. The research will be conducted at the Trondheim node of NORTEM/TEM Gemini Center, offering access to state-of-the-art instruments and a strong international professional environment. The position offers a gross annual salary of NOK 550,800, favorable pension terms, and employee benefits. Applicants must have a relevant Master's degree in Physics, Nanotechnology, Materials Science, or equivalent, with a strong academic record (average grade B or better on NTNU's scale). Experience with experimental work in physics, nanotechnology, or material science, and basic programming skills are required. Preferred qualifications include hands-on experience with electron microscopy (especially TEM), experience with industrial problems, knowledge of electrochemistry, programming/data processing in Python, and good Norwegian language skills. The position requires good oral and written English skills, independence, structured work habits, and the ability to communicate and collaborate effectively. The employment period is 3 years, and the starting date is August or September 2026 (flexible within reason).
