About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Sea-Ice Physics and Modelling within the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering in Trondheim, Norway.

The project is part of Arctic Ocean 2050, a national flagship programme for Arctic Ocean research. The PhD will focus on sea-ice dynamics, discrete element modelling (DEM), ridging processes, wave–ice interaction, and the Marginal Ice Zone (MIZ). The work builds on the SAMS (Simulation of Arctic Marine Systems) framework and aims to improve physically consistent sea-ice representations, continuum-model parameterizations, computational efficiency, and scalability for Arctic prediction and decision-support systems.

This is a research-intensive doctoral position in an interdisciplinary environment with access to advanced modelling tools and national computing infrastructure. The successful candidate will contribute to high-impact Arctic research relevant to climate feedbacks, navigation, infrastructure, observing systems, and geopolitics.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant Master’s degree in engineering, physics, applied mathematics, geophysics, oceanography, or equivalent; completion of the degree before starting; strong academic performance (B or better on NTNU’s scale or equivalent); admission eligibility for NTNU’s doctoral programme; good English communication skills; and experience with scientific programming. Preferred experience includes sea-ice physics, wave-ice interactions, Arctic processes, numerical modelling, HPC, interdisciplinary research, and Norwegian/Scandinavian language skills.

Funding and conditions: the position is funded through Arctic Ocean 2050 and runs for 3 years. Salary is normally NOK 550,800 per year before deductions, depending on qualifications and seniority. Working capital is included for project implementation.
