About this position

NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a PhD Candidate in Soft Aerial Robotics and Autonomy within the Department of Engineering Cybernetics in Trondheim, Norway.

The project focuses on multi-modal long-horizon navigation learning for aerial robots, with research directions including soft aerial robot design, control for flying robots, robot learning, model predictive control, and robust sim2real transfer. The position is part of the Autonomous Robots Lab and the funded Horizon Europe project RESSORT: Resilient Efficient Soft and Sustainable Optimized Robotics Technology.

The successful candidate will work on fundamental contributions to robot morphology, autonomy, and control, and is expected to collaborate with consortium partners. The post emphasizes research and experimentation in resilient robotic autonomy, including robot realization and testing.

Eligibility highlights: a relevant background in machine learning, evolutionary algorithms, optimization, robotics, or related fields; a master's degree equivalent to a five-year Norwegian degree program with 120 ECTS at master's level; strong academic performance (B or better on NTNU's scale); and admission to NTNU's PhD program in Engineering Cybernetics. Preferred experience includes C++/Python, CAD-based robot modeling and design, reinforcement learning or MPC, ROS, simulators, and real-world robotic implementation.

Funding: 3-year PhD appointment, externally funded, with a gross salary normally from NOK 550,800 per year depending on qualifications and seniority. Working capital is provided for project implementation.

Application deadline: 25 August 2026. Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no and submit the required documents: CV, certificates, transcripts and diplomas, master's thesis (or confirmation of submission), two referees, and any relevant publications/software/research outputs. If your education was completed abroad, include documentation of scope and quality, diploma supplements, and any HK-dir statement.
