About this position

Open postdoctoral position in Consensus-Based Modular and Heterogeneous Motion Generation for Multi-Purpose Robots at the Rainbow team, IRISA/Inria Rennes, France, hired by CNRS.

The project focuses on robotics, distributed optimization, consensus, model predictive control, trajectory optimization, and learning-based control for efficient, adaptable, and safe motion generation. The research aims to build a modular architecture where different robot subsystems or tasks can be solved by specialized solvers and coordinated through consensus, enabling heterogeneous combinations of model-based control and learned policies.

The successful candidate will work on the algorithmic foundations of modular motion generation, heterogeneous and hybrid coordination, and experimental validation on a multi-purpose mobile manipulator. Example applications include navigation in cluttered environments, whole-body and bi-manual manipulation, loco-manipulation, and manipulation of deformable objects, with on-the-fly reconfiguration without controller recompilation.

Eligibility: applicants must satisfy the Bienvenüe Bretagne programme conditions, especially the international mobility rule: at least 18 months abroad outside France between 1 May 2022 and 31 May 2026.

Requirements: PhD in Robotics, Control, Optimization, Learning, Computer Vision for Robotics, or related fields; strong background in optimization-based motion generation and/or numerical/distributed optimization; familiarity with reinforcement learning, imitation learning, or learned policies; strong programming skills in C++ and/or Python; experience with ROS, Pinocchio, MuJoCo, or Isaac is desirable; English proficiency and strong autonomy are expected.

Funding and duration: full-time postdoc for 18 months starting 1 October 2026, paid according to CNRS salary regulations depending on experience. The position is funded by the Région Bretagne through the Bienvenüe Bretagne HECTOR project.
