About this position
SINTEF Energy is recruiting a three-year PhD Candidate (MSCA) for the HeatMinds European Horizon Europe Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions (MSCA) Doctoral Network. The project, Multiscale design and optimization of ejectors integrated within novel IHTHP architectures, addresses the design and optimisation of ejectors for integration into industrial high-temperature heat pump (IHTHP) systems.
The doctoral research combines computational fluid dynamics (CFD), multiscale and multifidelity modelling, surrogate models, and reduced-order performance models to investigate two-phase ejector integration and component design. The developed models will be validated against experimental data to assess predictive accuracy and performance. The research contributes to the development of next-generation industrial heat pump technologies with relevance to decarbonisation and energy-efficient process heating.
The candidate will carry out research in collaboration with SINTEF and DTU Construct, and will pursue doctoral studies at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). The project also includes an international research secondment at Danfoss in Denmark, providing exposure to both academic and industrial research environments.
This is a research-intensive, full-time PhD opening in mechanical/thermal engineering. The strongest background match is in mechanical engineering with thermal and fluid flow phenomena, CFD, numerical methods, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamic cycle analysis, and programming. Experience with optimisation methods, surrogate modelling, multiphase flow, phase change modelling, and experimental validation is especially valued. Applicants must hold a two-year master’s degree (or equivalent), satisfy DTU Construct admission requirements, and demonstrate excellent English skills.
The position is funded through the EU Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network Grant HeatMinds and is conditional on external funding. The application deadline is 22 November 2026. Applicants must submit a cover letter, CV, transcripts, diploma documentation, and contact details for two referees via the online application portal.

What's required
Applicants must have a two-year master's degree (120 ECTS) or an equivalent degree at the same academic level. Final-year master's students may apply if the degree is completed and documented before 1 January 2027. A strong academic record (average grade B or better) or demonstrated research potential is required. Applicants must meet the PhD admission requirements at DTU Construct and have excellent written and spoken English. Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals with a focus on thermal and fluid flow phenomena, foundations of computational fluid dynamics, numerical methods, heat and mass transfer, thermodynamic cycle analysis, and programming are expected. Additional valued experience includes optimisation methods and/or surrogate modelling, multiphase flow and phase change modelling, and experimental methods and model validation.
How to apply
Apply through the online application form using the provided website link. Submit a cover letter, CV, grade transcripts, BSc/MSc diploma in English with grading scale, and contact details for two references. Applications missing required documentation will not be considered.
