About this position
The University of Vienna invites applications for a PhD Candidate (University Assistant, PraeDoc) in the Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation group, led by Professor Philip Walther. This four-year, well-funded position is based at the Faculty of Physics, within the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information group, and is part of the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA. The group is internationally recognized for its research in quantum optics, quantum information, and quantum technologies, with a focus on both fundamental science and scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and information applications.
Research topics include table-top experiments probing the foundations of quantum physics, measuring gravitational effects on entangled photons, quantum photonics for machine learning, quantum computing, and cybersecurity, as well as scaling multiphoton platforms using integrated optics, quantum-dot single-photon sources, and custom nonlinear materials. The group’s activities span quantum control of single photons, integrated waveguide technology, superconductor-based detectors, and precision interferometric measurements of weak gravitational forces.
As a PhD candidate, you will join a vibrant team of over 40 researchers, benefit from the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), and participate in a thriving quantum science community with more than 100 quantum scientists on site and 300 in Vienna. You will be involved in a specific, well-funded research project dedicated to multi-photon state generation and quantum machine learning protocols. Responsibilities include presenting your research plan to the faculty, completing a dissertation agreement within 12–18 months (reviewed annually), contributing to teaching (lab courses, exercise classes), administrative tasks, staying informed about advances in your field, and engaging in outreach through publications and conferences.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree or Diploma in physics, with a thesis in experimental quantum optics. Required experience includes experimental quantum optics, table-top experiments, multi-photon state generation, free space bulk-optics, programming digital interfaces for experimental instruments (Python), LaTeX, academic writing, and excellent English proficiency. The position offers a basic salary of EUR 3,776.10 (full-time basis, 14x per annum), with increases for credited professional experience. Employment duration is four years, initially limited to 1.5 years with automatic extension unless terminated within the first 12 months.
The University of Vienna provides a supportive, international academic environment, excellent public transport connections, and opportunities for internal training and skill development. The institution is committed to equal opportunities, diversity, and the advancement of women, with preference given to female candidates of equal qualification. To apply, submit your scientific CV, motivation letter, degree certificates, contact details for two referees, and the title and abstract of your Master thesis via the job portal before the deadline (May 14, 2026). For content questions, contact Prof. Philip Walther at [email protected].
