About this position
The University of Vienna invites applications for a PhD Candidate (University Assistant, PraeDoc) position in the Quantum Information Science and Quantum Computation research group, led by Univ.-Prof. Dr. Philip Walther. This group is part of the Quantum Optics, Quantum Nanophysics & Quantum Information group at the Faculty of Physics and is affiliated with the Vienna Center for Quantum Science and Technology (VCQ) and the Austrian Cluster of Excellence quantA. The research focuses on scalable photonic quantum technology for quantum computing and information applications, as well as fundamental quantum science questions, including quantum control of single photons, integrated waveguide technology, tailored nonlinear media, and precision measurements of weak gravitational forces.
As a PhD candidate, you will actively participate in a well-funded research project dedicated to experimental quantum foundations and indefinite causal order. You will present your research plan to the faculty and complete a dissertation agreement within 12-18 months, reviewed annually. Teaching responsibilities include lab courses and exercise classes, and you will contribute to administrative tasks and outreach activities such as publications, conference presentations, and public engagement.
The Walther Group comprises 35 researchers working collaboratively on experimental topics in quantum optics, quantum information, and quantum technologies. The group values teamwork and diversity, offering a unique skill set and knowledge base in quantum information, quantum computation, quantum communication, quantum foundations, and the quantum-gravity interface. You will also be a fellow of the Vienna Doctoral School in Physics (VDSP), joining a vibrant community of over 100 quantum scientists and 300 quantum researchers in Vienna.
Applicants must have completed a Master's degree or Diploma in physics, with a thesis in experimental quantum optics. Required experience includes table-top experiments, photonic platforms, optical non-linear processes, quantum foundations, academic writing, and proficiency in MATLAB, Python, and LaTeX. Excellent command of written and spoken English is essential. The University of Vienna promotes equal opportunities, diversity, and the advancement of women, with preference given to female candidates of equal qualification.
The position offers a basic salary of EUR 3,776.10 (40h/week, 14x per year), with increases for credited professional experience. The employment duration is 4 years, initially limited to 1.5 years with automatic extension unless terminated within the first 12 months. Additional benefits include free internal training and coaching, a healthy and fair working environment, and excellent public transport connections in Vienna.
To apply, submit your scientific CV, letter of motivation, bachelor's and master's degrees, title and abstract of your master's thesis, and contact details of two references via the application portal. For content questions, contact Prof. Philip Walther at [email protected]. The application deadline is 25 April 2026.
Join the University of Vienna and contribute to cutting-edge research in quantum information science and quantum computation, while benefiting from a supportive academic environment and opportunities for professional development.
