This PhD project will develop high-bandwidth quantum frequency converters for future hybrid quantum networks. The research addresses a central challenge in quantum networking: quantum technologies often operate at incompatible optical wavelengths. Visible single-photon sources, telecom communication channels and atomic quantum memories therefore require interfaces capable of translating photons between wavelength regimes. The project will use four-wave mixing in warm rubidium vapour to develop t...

About this position

This four-year PhD project in advanced signalling and detection in quantum communications explores how quantum communication systems can remain effective when quantum states and communication channels are uncertain.

The research will design and optimise resilient quantum signalling constellations for conveying classical information. In particular, the project will investigate constellation designs that maximise minimum trace distance and uniform Holevo-x information, addressing the limits imposed by uncertainty in quantum states and channels.

A second major focus is the development of advanced quantum detectors for quantum optical channels. The work will consider both low-rate and high-rate communication scenarios, with the aim of producing practical quantum detection techniques alongside efficient quantum signalling schemes.

The doctoral programme is based in the University of Southampton’s Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. It includes one year of structured training and a three-month industry placement, offering exposure to both academic research and applied quantum communication development. The project is intended to generate high-impact research outputs, including at least two top-journal papers and one or more conference papers.
