About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Oxford in Advancing Drug Delivery for Regeneration and Repair of the Aging Cartilage (Botnar-2026-01).

This DPhil project focuses on osteoarthritis, autophagy, ageing, drug discovery, and drug delivery, with a strong translational and regenerative medicine angle. The project aims to identify and validate novel therapeutic targets for osteoarthritis by restoring autophagy and cellular homeostasis, then test promising candidates in advanced patient-derived 3D musculoskeletal models, microfluidic systems, and mechanically loaded biomimetic joint environments.

The project is hosted by the Botnar Research Centre, part of the University of Oxford’s Institute of Musculoskeletal Sciences, offering a multidisciplinary environment spanning musculoskeletal biology, ageing research, tissue engineering, bioengineering, and preclinical osteoarthritis models. Training includes flow cytometry, histhistochemistry, confocal microscopy, RNAscope, high-content drug screening, 2D/3D cell culture, patient-derived organoid models, nanotechnologies for drug development and screening, quantitative image analysis, and specialist tissue engineering skills.

Supervisors are Dr Ghada Alsaleh, Associate Professor Dario Carugo, and Associate Professor Pierre-Alexis Mouthuy. The student may also work closely with the Centre for Osteoarthritis Pathogenesis Versus Arthritis.

This is a competition funded PhD project for students worldwide. Applicants should have, or expect to obtain, a first or upper second-class BSc degree or equivalent in a relevant subject, and must provide evidence of English language competence where applicable.

Applications open mid-September and the deadline is 1 December at 12:00. Apply through the University of Oxford graduate admissions route for the listed DPhil programmes, using the appropriate course code and programme title.
