About this position

PhD position in agricultural and food economics at the Swedish University of Agricultural Sciences (SLU) in Uppsala. The doctoral project sits in the Department of Economics and the research group Agricultural and Food Economics, with a focus on applied economic analysis of agriculture’s uptake of more sustainable production practices and practices that improve preparedness and resilience.

The project is grounded in microeconomic theory, applied econometrics, and economic modelling. It will use data such as farm-level panel data, survey data, and potentially registrar data and new survey collection. The position is well suited to candidates interested in agricultural economics, food economics, applied economics, and quantitative research on sustainability, resilience, and agricultural policy.

Eligibility requires a second-cycle Master’s degree or equivalent, plus specific economics preparation: at least 60 HEC in economics, including a degree project and at least 15 HEC at advanced level. Applicants should also have studied natural resource-related topics such as agriculture or forest management. English proficiency equivalent to Engelska B/6 is required. Strong communication skills in English are essential, and experience with statistical/econometric analysis, scientific publication, and knowledge of Swedish or European agricultural systems are considered merits.

The appointment is a 4-year doctoral student employment at 100% with salary according to the local collective agreement and fixed salary progression. Up to 20% departmental duties in teaching/administration may be included, which would extend the study period.

Deadline: 30 April 2026. Apply via the official SLU recruitment link and upload the required documents: cover letter, CV, degree certificates, transcript, Master’s thesis or equivalent project, proof of English language requirements, and two references. Foreign applicants must also provide a certified passport copy before admission.

Contact persons: Helena Hansson (Professor) and Enoch Owusu Sekyere (Senior Lecturer), both at SLU.
