About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in AI / machine learning for climate science, with a focus on mapping how future climate uncertainties and weather/climate impacts may affect Africa.
The project sits in the School of Earth & Environment and is part of the UNRISK CDT. It combines climate science, meteorology, data science, data analysis, applied statistics, and mathematical modelling to develop machine-learning approaches that downscale global climate model information to local, impact-relevant scales.
Research themes include tropical weather, convection-permitting models (CPMs), mesoscale convective systems (MCSs), climate variability, climate change uncertainty, and high-impact weather extremes in Sub-Saharan Africa. The student will work with rich model datasets and benchmark physical drivers of tropical weather to improve ML downscaling and explore how variability and climate change interact over years-to-decades timescales.
Funding: fully funded NERC studentship. Support includes full university tuition fees, a personal stipend at standard UKRI rates, £6000 for individual research and training costs, £5000 cohort-level training, and access to a Flexible Fund for special projects. UK and international applicants may apply, though international awards are limited and visa/IHS costs are not covered.
Eligibility: strong background in maths, physics, statistics, computer science, or meteorology. Interest in machine learning for climate applications is important; travel to Africa is optional, and visits to the UK Met Office may be part of the project.
Location: Leeds, United Kingdom.
Application: see the UNRISK website for further details and the application process. No explicit deadline is shown in the post.
