About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Exeter in Mathematics and Statistics, focused on tracking uncertainties from future storms to hazards and decisions.
This project sits within the UNRISK CDT and investigates how uncertainty in climate-model projections of extratropical cyclones translates into uncertainty in the wind and precipitation hazards that matter for society. The research combines climate science, meteorology, applied statistics, data science, mathematical modelling, uncertainty quantification, sensitivity analysis, emulation, and machine learning.
Working with supervisors Prof Jennifer Catto and Dr Hossein Mohammadi, the successful applicant will study how uncertain model parameters and processes influence storm-track characteristics, storm frequency, intensity, location, and the resulting surface hazards. A major aim is to identify which uncertainties matter most for climate-risk assessment and decision-making, and to develop fast statistical emulators such as Gaussian processes to make large-scale uncertainty analysis computationally feasible.
The project is suitable for students with a strong quantitative background, for example in Atmospheric Science, Physics, Maths, Statistics, or Computer Science, and an interest in high-impact weather and climate risk. The project is relevant to students who want to work at the interface of climate modelling, hazard analysis, and data-driven methods.
Funding: fully funded NERC studentship through UNRISK CDT, including full tuition fees, a UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, cohort training support, and a flexible fund for special projects.
Location: Exeter, United Kingdom.
Applications: open to UK and international applicants, with limited awards for international applicants under UKRI rules. Deadline shown on the page: 2027-01-13.
