About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds in the School of Mathematics (part of EPS) on uncertainty in recent global warming trends and related risks of extreme events using a global km-scale model.
The project investigates the recent increase in Earth’s energy imbalance, record global mean temperatures, and the rising frequency and intensity of regional extreme events. It asks whether high-resolution climate simulations can improve understanding of climate variability and change, and whether they can reduce uncertainty in predictions of recent warming trends and extreme events.
Research will focus on the period 2021–2026, including annual means and individual months. The work will use prescribed sea surface temperatures, stratified sampling of uncertain model parameters, lower-resolution experiments, and statistical or machine-learning emulators such as Bayesian statistical emulators to design experiments and quantify uncertainty. The project also explores a new cloudy energy balance model and its ability to assess uncertainty in high-resolution simulations.
The project has CASE support from the Met Office, with opportunities for visits and access to Met Office supercomputing facilities.
Eligibility: applicants with backgrounds in meteorology and climate science, or in statistics and mathematics, are suitable. Experience with Python or other data analysis tools is required, together with an interest in the physical processes governing climate change.
Funding: part of the UNRISK CDT, offering fully funded NERC studentships with full tuition coverage, a UKRI-rate stipend, research and training costs, cohort training support, and a flexible fund. Applications are open to UK and international applicants, although international awards are limited by UKRI rules.
Location: Leeds, United Kingdom.
Project supervisors: Prof Timothy Heaton, Dr Nadhir Ben Rached, Dr George Datseris, and Dr Lorenzo Tomassini.
