About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of Southampton in amorphous nonlinear photonics for scalable next-generation optical devices and quantum devices.
The project focuses on inducing second-order optical nonlinearity (χ²) in amorphous thin films to enable broadband on-chip modulators, spectrometers, and integrated quantum photonic components. Research themes include electro-optic modulation, integrated photonics, silicon photonics, photon pair generation, and applications in communications, sensing, LIDAR, RF-over-fibre, environmental sensing, biomedical spectroscopy, quantum key distribution, and random number generation.
You will work with a supervisory team led by Professor Senthil Murugan Ganapathy in the School of Optoelectronics (ORC), Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences. The project combines device design and simulation, thermal poling, microfabrication in cleanrooms, and device characterisation and testing.
Funding: competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide. Funding may include Horizon Europe fee waivers, Presidential Bursaries, or studentships that typically cover UK-level tuition fees and a stipend for living costs for top-ranked applicants.
Eligibility: UK 2:1 honours degree or international equivalent. English language qualification required if applicable.
How to apply: Apply via the University of Southampton research application route, selecting Research, 2027/28, Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, and programme PhD ORC (7097). Add the supervisor name in section 2 and upload your CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and language evidence if needed. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis, so early submission is recommended.
