About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of East Anglia on Antarctic glacial meltwater, ocean circulation, and climate.

This project, based in the School of Environmental Sciences at the University of East Anglia (Norwich, United Kingdom), is supervised by Dr Peter Sheehan. It investigates how fast-melting West Antarctic ice shelves release freshwater into surrounding shelf seas, how that meltwater moves through the Bellingshausen Sea, and how it affects ocean currents, salinity, temperature, and longer-term climate and ice-shelf melting feedbacks.

The research combines analysis of new and historical ocean observations from ships, profiling floats, tagged seals, and UEA ocean gliders with state-of-the-art ocean model output. The project is strongly oriented toward physical oceanography, ice-ocean interactions, climate science, data analysis, and data science, with additional relevance to environmental geography, meteorology, and marine sciences.

Training includes physical oceanography, Big-Data science, marine autonomy and robotics, glider deployment and piloting, and opportunities to apply for the FDSE fluid dynamics summer school. The project may also include participation in a Southern Ocean cruise, subject to medical clearance.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should have at least a UK-equivalent 2:1 Bachelors (Honours) degree and strong numerical/computational skills. A background or interest in natural sciences, physics, mathematics, oceanography, meteorology, or environmental sciences is preferred. English language requirement is IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each component.

This is a competition-funded PhD project for students worldwide. The page does not list a stipend amount or application deadline. Interested candidates should register their interest via the FindAPhD enquiry form on the listing.
