About this position

PhD opportunity in Astronomy / Astrophysics at the University of Southampton

This funded PhD project, The Making of Bulges and Giant Elliptical Galaxies, is based in the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences at the University of Southampton, United Kingdom. The project focuses on galaxy formation and evolution, especially how massive galaxies built their bulges and spheroids in the early Universe.

You will use observations from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to study galaxies at the peak epoch of galaxy formation, around 10 billion years ago. The research asks whether galaxy collisions or internal evolutionary processes are mainly responsible for building compact bulges in gas-rich progenitor galaxies. You will compare observations with theoretical galaxy evolution models and work with the Southampton Cosmology group.

Training includes reduction, analysis, and interpretation of high-resolution JWST imaging and ALMA interferometric data, multi-wavelength image analysis, structural modelling of galaxies, spatially resolved stellar population measurements, and statistical methods for large astronomical datasets. The project also offers experience with scientific programming, data analysis, hypothesis testing, and research communication.

Eligibility: a UK 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in physics, astronomy, astrophysics, or a closely related discipline. Applicants should have a strong interest in galaxy formation and evolution, Python or similar programming skills, good analytical and problem-solving ability, and strong communication skills. Prior experience with astronomical data analysis, scientific computing, statistical analysis, modelling, galaxy evolution, extragalactic astronomy, or cosmology is desirable.

Funding is competition-based. Options mentioned include Horizon Europe fee waivers, Presidential Bursaries, and school studentships that may cover UK-level tuition fees and a stipend for living costs. Funding is awarded on a rolling basis, so early application is encouraged.

To apply, use the University of Southampton application portal: choose Research, select 2027/28 and the Faculty of Engineering and Physical Sciences, search for PhD Physics (7089), and add the supervisor name in section 2. Submit a CV, two academic references, transcripts/certificates, and an English language qualification if applicable. For an initial conversation, contact [email protected].
