About this position

Beijing Institute of Technology (BIT), School of Mechatronical Engineering, is advertising a funded PhD project on asymptotic analysis of hypersonic flow over forward- and backward-facing steps.

The project is hosted by Prof. Xuerui Mao's research group and involves collaboration with Dr. Diego Exposito (PI). The research focuses on developing a theoretical and numerical framework based on triple-deck asymptotic theory to analyse hypersonic flow over canonical step and cavity geometries. The student will extend existing numerical algorithms, validate asymptotic predictions against conventional Navier–Stokes simulations, and use open-source CFD software. There is also scope to explore three-dimensional step configurations and the open cavity problem, with relevance to supersonic combustion chamber flows.

This opportunity is especially relevant for students interested in fluid mechanics, computational methods, mathematics, and aerospace engineering. The group also works across data assimilation, modal analysis, icing/de-icing, fluid-solid interaction, and computational simulation/modelling of flows.

Funding includes a net monthly salary of 3500 RMB, free one-bedroom campus accommodation, or an additional 1000 RMB/month for off-campus accommodation. The position lasts three years and is open to students worldwide.

Applications are accepted all year round. Interested candidates should email their CV and two references to [email protected].

What's required

Applicants should be highly motivated and enthusiastic PhD candidates with interest in fluid mechanics, asymptotic analysis, and computational methods. The project is suited to candidates who want both theoretical and practical research experience; prior experience with numerical methods or CFD would be advantageous. International candidates are welcome, and the group notes that English is comfortable on campus.
