About this position

Utrecht University is offering a PhD position in Biofabrication technologies for in situ control of cellular environments, focusing on advanced bioprinting and regenerative medicine. The successful candidate will join the Malda and Levato research groups within the Regenerative Medicine Center Utrecht, working on cutting-edge bioprinting technologies such as light-based volumetric and multiphoton printing, as well as magnetic and acoustic field-based techniques. The research aims to control cells and materials within assembled and in vivo developing tissues, with a key focus on cardiac and renal tissue engineering.

The project is part of the DRIVE-RM consortium, providing opportunities to collaborate with a multidisciplinary network of 24 PhD candidates across Utrecht University, UMC Utrecht, Hubrecht Institute, Maastricht University, and TU Eindhoven. The research will involve developing organoid culture and biofabrication techniques, contributing to developmental biology and regenerative medicine. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including the Utrecht Biofabrication Facility, and will work in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team of veterinarians, clinicians, material scientists, biologists, and engineers.

Applicants must hold an MSc degree in biomedical engineering, biology, biotechnology, bioengineering, materials science, or a related field, with proven expertise in bioprinting technologies and cell/tissue culture. Proficiency in English and strong communication and collaboration skills are required. The position offers a four-year contract (one year initially, extendable), a gross monthly salary between €3,059 and €3,881, 8% holiday pay, 8.3% year-end bonus, pension scheme, and flexible employment terms. Utrecht University values diversity and inclusion and encourages applicants from all backgrounds.

To apply, submit your CV and motivation letter via the Utrecht University job portal before 11 February 2026. For more information, contact Riccardo Levato or Jos Malda by email. This is an excellent opportunity for candidates passionate about biofabrication, bioprinting, and regenerative medicine to contribute to innovative research in a leading academic environment.
