About this position

This fully funded PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds focuses on biomedical engineering, specifically the computational biomechanics of patient-specific maxillofacial implants. The project aims to develop and validate in silico tools for the preclinical evaluation of custom implants used in facial reconstruction, leveraging advances in 3D medical imaging and printing. The research will integrate experimental and computational techniques, including finite element analysis, to test and optimize implant designs for individual patients. The successful candidate will join the Institute of Medical and Biological Engineering (iMBE), a world-renowned center within the School of Mechanical Engineering, and work closely with clinicians from Leeds University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and industrial experts. Training will cover computational modelling, 3D image analysis, experimental testing, project management, scientific writing, and presentation skills. Applicants must be UK citizens with a strong academic background in engineering or physical sciences, and experience in biomechanics, FEA, or related areas is desirable. The funding covers tuition and a stipend for 3.5 years. The application deadline is 14 November 2025, with the project starting in October 2026. Interested candidates should apply online, specifying the relevant program and supervisor, and are encouraged to contact Dr Peter Watson for informal discussion. The university fosters an inclusive environment and encourages applications from diverse backgrounds.
