About this position

PhD opening in cerebellar morphology and neuroimaging at the Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) in the Netherlands. The project focuses on the human cerebellum, using Ultra-High Field MRI and postmortem brain tissue to study mesoscale cerebellar structure and provide ground-truth measurements for in-vivo work.

You will work in the Ultra-High Field Neuroimaging group at the Netherlands Institute for Neuroscience and the Spinoza Centre for Neuroimaging, in a collaborative environment with access to advanced facilities including 7T MRI and the Netherlands Brain Bank. The project combines neuroscience techniques such as data analysis, tissue staining, microscopy, quantitative image analysis, neuroanatomy, and postmortem MRI.

Eligibility highlights: an MSc in biomedical engineering, physics, biology, or a related field (or near completion), strong technical skills, programming experience in Python and MATLAB, and good spoken and written English. Interest or experience in microscopy, image analysis, neuroanatomy, or MRI is advantageous.

Funding and terms: this is a salaried PhD employment position, 1.0 fte (38 hours/week), with a gross monthly salary of €3204–€4051 plus standard employment benefits.

Application window: apply by 26 October 2026. Submit a motivation letter and CV through the AcademicTransfer portal. More information is available from Dr. Wietske van der Zwaag.
